A retaining wall is how you get usable ground back out of a sloping block. Done properly it holds the soil, moves the water away and lasts decades. Done badly it bulges, leans and takes the fence above it with it.

Wall systems we build

• Concrete sleeper walls — the long-life option. Low to no maintenance, a wide range of finishes, and the pick when you want to build it once and forget it
• Timber sleeper walls with an H-beam system — treated timber sleepers dropped into galvanised steel H beams. High tensile, galvanised for a long life, and strong enough for serious retaining
• Timber sleeper walls with post uprights — the same sleeper wall using an additional sleeper as the upright support, where that suits the site better
• Composite sleepers — a middle ground when you want the sleeper look without the timber maintenance
• Garden beds — the smaller retaining work that shapes a yard, terraces a slope or lifts a garden off the ground

Drainage is the part that decides whether it lasts

Most retaining walls that fail don’t fail because the wall was weak. They fail because water built up behind them with nowhere to go, and the pressure did the rest.

If drainage is needed, and it usually is, the wall gets the proper aggregate and a seepage pipe installed behind it, run to somewhere the water can actually discharge. It’s the part of the job you never see and the part that determines whether the wall is still straight in twenty years.

A retaining wall is rarely just the wall. There’s ground to cut, spoil to move and fill to bring back in behind it. We can handle the site excavation and sort the soils and back fill so it’s one crew and one quote, rather than you chasing a separate excavator.

Walls and fences together

On most blocks the retaining wall and the boundary fence are the same job, and the wall has to be right before the fence goes on top of it. Concrete sleepers or timber sleepers?

Concrete is the long-life, low-maintenance choice and it’s what most people pick when the wall is staying put for good. Timber sleepers in an H-beam system cost less up front and still build a strong wall. We’ll tell you which suits your site and your budget on the measure.

Does my retaining wall need drainage?

Usually yes. Water building up behind a wall is what pushes walls over, so unless the site drains freely on its own the wall gets aggregate and a seepage pipe behind it, run to a proper discharge point.

Can you build the retaining wall and the fence above it?

Yes, and it’s the better way to do it. The wall sets the levels the fence sits on, so having one crew do both means the line works out and there’s no gap between trades.

Do you handle the excavation and the fill?

Yes. We can take care of the site excavation and organise soils and back fill, so the cut, the wall and the fill are all part of the one job.
