Most Gold Coast fences come down to three materials. Colorbond is the best all-rounder for a full-height boundary: solid privacy, close to zero upkeep and the best price per metre for the job. Timber is the cheapest to put up and gives you the natural look, though it needs oiling and it moves over time. Aluminium costs the most per metre but never rusts, so it’s the pick for pool surrounds, front boundaries and blocks close to the surf. Colorbond: the all-rounder most Coast homes pick

Colorbond does the heavy lifting on the Gold Coast. It gives you a solid privacy face on both sides, comes in 14 colours to match your roof or render and needs next to no maintenance. A hose down a couple of times a year is the whole job. There’s no oiling, no painting and no rust bleed when it’s installed for the conditions. A standard 1.8m residential run sits around $95 to $140 per linear metre supplied and installed, which is the sweet spot for a full-height boundary.

The one thing to watch is salt. Within about 100 metres of breaking surf, BlueScope recommend Colorbond Stainless instead of the standard product, so we’ll quote that rather than fit the wrong thing and hope. Everywhere else standard Colorbond takes the coastal climate fine when the cut edges are sealed and the fixings are marine-grade. Full detail sits on our Colorbond fencing page.

Timber: the natural look, if you’ll maintain it

Timber is the cheapest way to get a fence up and nothing beats the look of a hardwood paling boundary when it’s fresh. If budget is the driver and you like the warm, natural finish, timber makes sense. A standard run comes in around $75 to $120 per metre installed depending on the timber.

The catch is upkeep. Timber needs oiling or staining every year or two to hold its colour and keep the moisture out, and in our climate it moves. Palings cup, gaps open up and posts can rot at the ground line over time. It also won’t go the distance Colorbond or aluminium will. Ten to fifteen years is a fair innings for a well-kept timber fence here, against twenty-plus for the other two. Aluminium: the coastal and pool specialist

Aluminium is the premium option and it earns its price in two spots. First, it does not rust, full stop, so it’s the safest bet on a block close to the water where even Colorbond needs the Stainless spec. Second, its open tubular or slat profile is built for pool surrounds and decorative front boundaries where you want to see through the fence rather than wall the yard off. Around $115 to $200 per metre installed depending on the style.

It’s the standard choice for a compliant pool barrier because the spacing and height rules are met out of the box, and it pairs neatly with a Colorbond side and rear boundary. A lot of Coast homes run exactly that mix: Colorbond where they want privacy, aluminium across the front and around the pool. So which one should you choose?

Work backwards from the job:

• A standard side or rear boundary, best value, set and forget: Colorbond. It’s why most Coast fences are steel.
• Tightest budget and you like the natural look, happy to oil it: timber.
• A pool fence, a front boundary or a block within cooee of the surf: aluminium.
• Most homes: a mix. Colorbond on the boundaries, aluminium on the frontage and pool.
